Breast Augmentation / Breast Implants / Augmentation Mammaplasty
Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) is a procedure where the breast is enlarged by the placement of a breast implant under the breast. There are various reasons to perform this procedure which include balancing differences in breast size, improve body contour, increase self confidence, or as a reconstructive technique following surgery.
There are a number of techniques for the insertion of a breast implant and multiple types of implants available.
A consultation is required before any surgery with Mr Stanley Loo at Eastcare Medical Specialist Centre, 260 Botany Road, Howick, Auckland or Ormiston Specialist Centre, 125 Ormiston Rd, Flat Bush, Auckland to discuss what your requirements are and to determine the best technique and implant for you. During this consultation you will be assessed for the suitability of this procedure, the procedure and implants will be explained to you, and instructed on how to minimise complications to give you the best possible results.
Breast Augmentation Surgery / Breast Implant Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic at Ormiston Hospital, Botany and takes approximately 1.5 - 2.5 hours. A small skin incision is made to allow the chosen implant to be placed. The breast implant can be placed directly under the breast tissue or under the underlying muscle (this is discussed in the consultation prior to the operation). The position and breast symmetry is checked prior to closing to give the best symmetrical result. The placement of a breast implant not only enlarges the breast but can give the breast a lift resulting in a more youthful breast appearance. Dissolving suttures are placed to minimise post operative discomfort.
Post operative care following breast augmentation
When you wake up from this procedure there is usually minimal discomfort, some may feel tightening of the area which is due to the breast implant stretching the overlying tissues. This can be managed with simple pain relief medications. The tightening sensation generally settles in a few weeks as the tissues accomodate the new implant.
